Gifting: What do you buy a 2-year-old?

We debated for a while what to buy Ruby for her birthday. I really try not to have a million toys in our house and resist the urge to buy her all of the cute things I see for kids. She has plenty just from hand-me-down toys from my childhood (my mom saved so much!) and from gifts she's received. Jude and I have tried to limit ourselves to one "special" present for each birthday and Christmas. Her first Christmas was a muppet puppet, her first birthday was a drum, this past Christmas was a small piano. Now that she is a talker, I asked her recently what she wanted for her birthday.

She said: "Um...just a pony."
I asked her if she wanted a toy pony, to which she responded:
"No. Just a real pony."

Now...clearly I can't buy her a real pony, but that did spark an idea for something "real." The other day, we took a family outing to the pet store and let Ruby pick out a fish. She got a gorgeous Betta fish and named him: "GoldieFish-Chocolate-Cream-Pie-Dorothy-Fish." But she usually just calls him: "GoldieFish."
